More than 450 attendees at the TMS 2013 Annual Meeting and Exhibition in San Antonio gathered on March 5 to explore the connections between fundamental research and materials science, within the context of a complex and often volatile global economy, at "Global R&D Trends—Implications for Material Sciences: The Acta Materialia Materials and Society Award Special Symposium."
Organized in honor of Jeffrey Wadsworth, President and Chief Executive Officer, Battelle Memorial Institute, the symposium also featured presentations by Craig Barrett, Retired Chief Executive Officer/Chairman of the Board, Intel Corporation; Siegfried Hecker, Emeritus Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory; William Nix, Professor Emeritus, Stanford University; and Subra Suresh, Director, U.S. National Science Foundation.
