This report presents findings of the Office of Technology Assessment. At the time of publishing of this report, the US imported more than $1 billion worth of chromium, cobalt, manganese, and platinum group metals annually, most of which came from the Soviet Union and southern Africa. This study assessed alternatives, i.e. opportunities for domestic and diversified foreign production. Conservation and recycling of strategic materials is discussed.
