What can TMS2016 offer you? The TMS 2016 Annual Meeting & Exhibition presents students with invaluable opportunities to learn more about the minerals, metals, and materials professions, network with
professionals and peers, and compete in lucrative, resume-building competitions.
A number of student competitions and activities are planned for the meeting. Plan to participate in these events and make the most of your experience at TMS2016!
Don’t Forget Your Student ID!
Every student who registers for the TMS 2016 Annual Meeting & Exhibition at the student rate will be asked to show a valid student ID when they pick up their badges at the registration desk. This is the only way to make sure you receive the deeply discounted student attendee rate on the conference. So please—when you pack your bags for Nashville, don’t forget to bring your student ID!
Looking to earn some spending money during TMS2016? Consider applying to be a student monitor, where you will assist session chairs with room lighting, notify staff of audio/visual equipment problems, and take attendance.
Student Monitor Assignments for TMS2016
Please Note: TMS will not be assigning sessions in advance of the meeting for TMS2016. Instead, student monitors are asked to review the list of sessions provided so that they are prepared to make their selections onsite. No assignments will be made in advance of the meeting.
We are past the deadline to receive applications for student monitor opportunities in advance of the meeting. However, you can still submit the application onsite to participate.
Step #1
Please review the student monitor responsibilities for TMS2016.
Step #2
Please complete the student monitor application form. Report to the Programming Support Desk located at Exhibit Hall Concourse (L3) with the application form at 7:00 a.m. on the day you are available to monitor sessions.
Step #3
Review the TMS2016 Session List to be ready to select your session assignments onsite at TMS2016.
TMS2016 Materials Bowl
Date: Sunday, February 14, 2016
Location: Music City Center, Davidson Ballroom B
Elimination Rounds – 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Championship Round – 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Celebrating its 10th Anniversary! Even if you
aren’t competing in this materials-themed quizshow
competition, you are welcome to attend the
elimination rounds or the final championship round.
Play along to test your knowledge of minerals,
metals, and materials science and engineering or
to cheer on your favorite school.

Student Mixer
Date: Sunday, February 14, 2016
Time: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Music City Center, Davidson Ballroom C
Start your annual meeting experience off at the Student Mixer on Sunday evening after the championship match of the Materials Bowl. This event presents an opportunity
to network with fellow Material Advantage students and professionals in a fun, relaxed setting. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Student Poster Competition

The five technical divisions of TMS are excited to sponsor the student poster contest, held each year at the TMS Annual Meeting.
Stop by and browse the student poster displays at your leisure or attend the official judging session to ask questions of the participants. If you are participating in the student poster contest you must be present at the
judging session to answer questions about your work.

Student-Run Symposium: Transforming the Diversity Landscape

Location: Music City Center Room 104A
Organized by graduate students Wennie Wang, Natalie Larson, and David Hwang (pictured, left to right) of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Building on the first TMS Summit on Diversity in the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions (DMMM1), this symposium seeks to address challenges of the current diversity landscape in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and to provide concrete actions to promote diversity.

2016 Bladesmithing Symposium
Date: Tuesday, February 16, 2016
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.
Location: Music City Center, Room 104A
This symposium builds upon the phenomenal success of the Bladesmithing Competition held at TMS2015 last year, and will serve as a bridge for bladesmithing engagement until the next Bladesmithing Competition is
conducted at TMS2017 in San Diego, California.
The 2016 bladesmithing event will take the form of a traditional symposium with technical presentations focusing on bladesmithing processes and procedures.
The symposium will kick off with a keynote presentation delivered by Jeffrey Wadsworth, President and CEO of Battelle, "Connections: Superplasticity,
Damascus Steels, Laminates, the
Giza Pyramid, and Carbon Dating."
Students and student teams will then present
their work associated with or inspired by the 2015 Bladesmithing Competition.

Student Career Forum

"When should I start my job search?" "Should I continue to graduate school or begin my career?" "How important is networking to my career?" If you find yourself
asking questions like these about your future, then you should attend the Student Career Forum. Organized by the TMS Young Professional Committee, this session will
feature speakers from various stages of their careers and diverse materials science backgrounds to discuss how to navigate a successful career path in the fields of
minerals, metals, and materials.
