Live Event: Tuesday, May 18, 2021
Based on his experience in alloy and process design over the last 71 years, Dr. Raymond Decker will cite case histories of notable alloy designs in this webinar while counting the surprising breadth of practical applications. From these cases, he will extract trends in a) alloy theory and models, b) instruments for affirming theory, c) information resources, and d) sponsorship mechanisms. Finally, Dr. Decker will recommend a "recipe" for effective alloy design and application.
What You Will Experience
- Learn methods to excite students and practitioners in future careers in alloy design and in materials science and engineering (MSE)
- Review and record progress in the art of science
- Explore the successes of those who came before and how you can follow in their footsteps

About the Speakers
Raymond Decker
Chief Technology Officer, nanoMAG, LLC
Bio
Dr. Raymond F. Decker is a TMS Fellow and has been a member of TMS for 71 years. His technical specialty over that period has been alloy and process design and application. His alloy inventions have encompassed Ni-Base Superalloys, Maraging Steels, Thixomolding (semi-solid magnesium), and bioabsorbable magnesium BioMg 250 to fix bone trauma. After service as a Lieutenant in the US Army during the Korean War, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. Decker is a serial entrepreneur, having co-founded Thixomat, Inc. and nanoMAG, LLC, where he serves as Chief Technology Officer. Earlier in his varied career, he was a researcher and Corporate VP of Research at INCO, LTD, VP of Research at Michigan Technological University, President of ASM International, and Chairman of ASM Materials Education Foundation. Currently, Decker is a member of the Board of Managers at QuesTek Innovations, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and an active member of the TMS-IMD Magnesium Committee.
Moderator
Victoria Miller
Assistant Professor, University of Florida
Bio
Victoria (Tori) Miller has been in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida since September 2017. Prior to that, she spent two years as an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. She received her B.S.E. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2011 and completed her Ph.D. in the Materials Department at the University of California Santa Barbara in 2016. After graduate school, she worked for a year at UES, Inc. as a Research Scientist onsite in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory in Dayton, OH. She had also previously worked at Ford Motor Company Research and Development, Toyota Engineering and Manufacturing North America, and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Miller leads the MONSTER group, with research focused on “bridging the mesoscale gap.” The group links macroscopic processing phenomena to statistical descriptions of micro- and nanoscale structural evolution, enabling the development of predictive thermomechanical process models for engineering applications.
