There are three basic reasons: 1) Opportunities for professional development; 2) Opportunities for gaining new and advanced knowledge in my area of research; and 3) Opportunities for networking and meeting scientists and engineers from academia, funding agencies, national labs, and industry. This year being an Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD; now Functional Materials Division) Young Leader Awardee, I got valuable experience to serve as a judge for the Materials Bowl and student poster contest. I got first-hand knowledge of how TMS committees work by attending the Board of Directors meeting. I co-organized the Nanomaterials Committee at the TMS 2010 Annual Meeting & Exhibition. The Young Leader and EMPMD Luncheons and the TMS-AIME Award Banquet provided me with the opportunity to network with senior members of the society. Such opportunities are always an excellent learning and inspiring experience. The list of such great experiences is long so I will stop here by saying that TMS and the Young Professionals Program proved critical in allowing me to contribute towards the mission of teaching, research, and service. There were useful and relevant technical talks presented every day of the conference. Because of these opportunities, I now feel as though becoming actively involved with the organization is much more accessible. As a result, I plan to become active on two different technical committees within the EMPMD and to assist in organizing a symposium for the next TMS Annual Meeting. - Other: First of all, I would like to thank the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD; now Functional Materials Division) for selecting me as an intern for 2006. It has been truly a great honor to be part of this class of highly motivated young professionals in the field of materials science and engineering. My experiences during the TMS 2006 Annual Meeting & Exhibition were highly rewarding from the very beginning. The Young Leader Committee meeting on Sunday was very informative and allowed me to find, right from the start, a place were I am sure I can contribute to TMS, at least during my first years as a young professional member. In the Young Leader and President Receptions I also had the opportunity to meet with many of the senior members of TMS. Their enthusiasm and interest in the growth of the community through the participation of young members was very inspiring and helped me realize the actual meaning of the award. I also attended the Alloy Phase Committee meeting, where I met very important and recognized researchers in my field, and through my participation in that meeting I became very motivated to actively participate in that group. The EMPMD Council meeting was also very instructive as it let me know about the inner workings of the division and helped me realize the great number of activities for which the division is responsible, such as the coordination of symposia, publications, workshops, and so forth. The thing that impressed me the most, however, was the great interest within the EMPMD to reach out to teachers and students in grades K-12 so they would become familiar with the exciting world of materials. Another very rewarding experience was my participation as a judge in the student poster competition. Being on the other side of such competitions for a long time, I was not aware of the great responsibility and honor of being a judge. It was very rewarding to witness the wonderful work that so many talented students were presenting. It was truly very difficult to compare and rank such a great number of posters of very high quality. Finally, I would like to encourage all young professionals in the materials community to consider applying for this internship, as it is a great opportunity to become involved with the TMS organization, develop connections with important people in the field, and as a result grow as a professional researcher in the exciting field of materials science and engineering.

- Other: I feel great honor and pleasure to be a TMS Young Leader Internship recipient in 2006. I would like to express my gratitude to the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD; now Functional Materials Division) for selecting me. During the TMS 2006 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2006), the Young Leader Internship program allowed me to attend several committee meetings, including Young Leader Business Meeting, EMPMD Council, Electronic Packaging & Interconnection Materials Committee, the Lead-Free Technology Workshop, and the TMS-AIME Annual Awards Banquet. I also was approved to be a member to join the Alloy Phase Committee. The Young Leaders program allowed me to learn professional skills in several fields, such as leadership skills, membership development, and committee organization through attending various committees or social events. This program also let me to meet my old friends, and famous scholars, professors, and scientists from all over the world. Before, I only knew these people by reading their papers, but now I could talk to them or discuss some technical/academic questions with them face-to-face through social activities or their presentations during TMS2006. I also made some new friends from other countries. From these activities, I can truly feel that TMS soundly encourages and promotes young professionals to participate not only in the materials world but also in organizing or managing committees and to become a leader. I had a wonderful and impressive memory in TMS2006. I deeply appreciate TMS and EMPMD for giving me this valuable opportunity. I hope TMS can continue this program for young scholars or engineers. I will also encourage my friends to apply to this program and attend TMS. Although TMS2006 was the prefect ending for me, I believe that it is just a new start for me. I am already becoming a part of the TMS family and look forward to making a contribution and life-long service to TMS.

- Other: I am very appreciative of being selected as a TMS Young Leader Intern for 2005. This program is a very beneficial aspect of TMS and should be a model for other societies. Having had this experience, it is an ideal way to integrate new members or former TMS student members, like me, into making professional contributions to the Society. The Young Leader Internship provided a pathway to meet key committee contacts in my field of interest. As a student member, I was relatively unaware of how the Society operates, who to contact, and how a conference is operated. The internship provides the behing-the-scenes knowledge on how to become a service-orientated member. Undoubtedly, this internship accelerated my professional integration into TMS. At the Annual Meeting, I attended the Nanomaterials and Thin Film & Interfaces sub-committees and the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (now Functional Materials Division) Council meeting. While at these committee meetings, I took part in the development of future symposium topics at TMS. For example, I became involved with the discussion at the Thin Film & Interfaces sub-committee for a symposium on novel characterization techniques for high surface area materials. I hope TMS continues this program for future members; it is an ideal resource for TMS to motivate and educate new members into life-long service to TMS.

- Other: It has been a great experience for me to attend the TMS 2005 Annual Meeting & Exhibition. As a Young Leader Intern, I got the chance to attend many committee meetings. I attended the Young Professionals Committee meeting and met many previous Young Leaders. It was great to hear about their experiences and know about how to be involved in symposium organizing. I also attended Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (now Functional Materials Division) Council meeting, Nanomaterials committee meeting, and several other committee meetings. I am planning to join one or two of these committees and help co-organize one or two symposiums. I hope later on, I can organize my own symposium. The awards banquet for the TMS meeting was very successful. I saw many young researchers were recognized, and even some students. I felt this is a good way to grow TMS. I also presented an invited talk in one symposium and attended many other interesting symposia related to my research area. I met many famous scientists in my research field. I have been attending TMS and MRS meetings in the past several years, and the most significant difference I saw in this TMS meeting is that many young faces were shown in the meeting places. Many graduate students were at the meeting. I believe, once we have these young people join our organization, TMS will grow in the near future. Another important aspect is that this meeting is indeed an international conference. I met one of my classmates from China. She is working as a technical staff member in one of China Aluminum Companies. She was there to attend the meeting and exchange some technical information.

- Other: I really enjoyed attending the TMS 2004 Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Charlotte. After participating in the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (now Functional Materials Division) Council meeting and committee meetings, I have a better understanding of the way in which technical sessions are selected and planned, the sources for conference and publication funding, and the governing structure of TMS. A lot of work goes into making TMS successful that is not apparent when you just attend the technical sessions. I'm excited to continue participating in TMS and to help contribute to future TMS meetings. I'd like to thank TMS for the opportunity to attend the annual meeting as a Young Leader Intern.

- Other: It is a great pleasure and honor to be selected as a 2002 Young Leader Intern of the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD; now Functional Materials Division) of TMS. This program is a wonderful opportunity to become familiar with the various aspects of running the Society that I might not have been exposed to otherwise. While in Seattle, I met many new friends, and renewed several old acquaintances. Interacting with fellow Young Leaders and meeting with the society leadership gave me a keen sense of the important issues that we currently face as professionals and as a Society. During the conference, I attended the EMPMD Council meeting where the Chairman, Bob Shull, specifically asked that I serve as the Division representative to the Education Committee. I have contacted representatives for the Electronic Packaging and Interconnection Materials Committee, as well as the Thin Films and Interfaces Committee and plan on becoming very active on those committees in the near future. I was also elected as the Secretary of the Young Professionals Committee. I look forward to the upcoming years of service to EMPMD and TMS.

- Other: During the TMS Annual Meeting in Nashville, I learned a lot about the inner workings of TMS, renewed old contacts, and made some new contacts which will hopefully develop into future collaborative research partners. Since I did not have funding to attend the Annual Meeting, I did not submit an abstract. After learning that I was selected as a Young Leader 2000 Intern, I quickly submitted an abstract and was able to present my research on hard magnetic materials during the general abstracts session on Ferrous and Refractory Metals. Previously, at past conferences, I focused my time on the technical presentations but due to this program, I was able to experience some new facets of a professional conference. I attended both the Young Leaders Committee Business Meeting and the Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division Council meetings. I learned a lot about the inner workings of a large organization like TMS and was surprised to learn how valuable individual efforts and individual contributions of time are to the Society. My wife and I were also able to attend the AIME & TMS Awards Ceremony and Banquet and I enjoyed hearing the achievements of the award recipients who represent role models and whose lives represent roadmaps for success. In addition, I enjoyed learning about the relevant physical and mechanical metallurgy of the "Ancient Arts of Sword Making." I thank TMS again for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my education at the fall meeting in St. Louis. I have submitted an abstract at this meeting and will also be a co-chair during a technical session.
