Scholarships

Through TMS, Material Advantage members and TMS Graduate Program members can apply for a number of scholarships funded by the TMS Foundation. For more information on each scholarship, and to learn how to apply, follow the link to the appropriate TMS Honors and Awards webpage.

Graduate Scholarships

AIME Henry deWitt Smith Scholarship 

The principal aim and purpose of this scholarship fund is to further the mineral industries by affording educational opportunities in the arts and sciences pertaining to those industries, particularly by assisting worthy students in the mining, metallurgical, and petroleum departments of leading colleges and universities which confer degrees in mineral engineering.

International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarship 

Available to full-time PhD students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on all aspects of superalloys. 

Undergraduate Scholarships

Acta Materialia Inc. Undergraduate Scholarships

Available to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or to undergraduate students with a significant interest in the materials area, this scholarship is supported by the generosity of Acta Materialia, Inc. and issued under the TMS Foundation.

Extraction & Processing Division (EPD) Scholarship

Available to full-time undergraduate applicants in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in the extraction and processing of minerals, metals and materials.

Functional Materials Division (FMD) Gilbert Chin Scholarship 

Available to a full-time undergraduate student in their sophomore or junior year, who is studying subjects in relation to synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of electronic, photonic, magnetic, and superconducting materials as well as materials used in packaging, and interconnecting such materials in device structures. 

Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship

Available to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction programs. 

Light Metals Division (LMD) Scholarship

Available to full-time undergraduate applicants in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on both traditional (aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, lithium, and other reactive metals) and emerging (composites, laminates, etc.) light metals. 

Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (MPMD) Scholarship 

Available to full-time undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on manufacturing from product design to production, integrating process control technology into manufacturing, and basic and applied research into key materials technologies that impact manufacturing processes. 

Structural Materials Division (SMD) Scholarship 

Available to full-time undergraduate applicants in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on the science and engineering of load-bearing materials, including studies into the nature of a material’s physical properties based upon its microstructure and operating environment. .

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

WAAIME Scholarships

Through TMS, undergraduate and graduate Material Advantage student members are eligible to apply for scholarships funded by WAAIME, a division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. The WAAIME Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students pursuing earth science degrees including mining, geological sciences, metallurgy, petroleum, mineral sciences, materials science and engineering, mineral economics, chemical engineering, and other related studies. The number and amount of scholarships awarded yearly are dictated by the funds available and by the financial needs of the applicants.
