The First TMS Summit on Creating and Sustaining Diversity in the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Professions (DMMM1): Honoring the First Female Member of AIME: Ellen Swallow Richards
July 29–31, 2014 * National Academy of Sciences Building (2101 Constitution Ave, NW)* Washington, DC
Over the course of two and a half days, summit attendees will hear from invited speakers, listen to panel discussions, participate
in facilitated discussions, and learn a variety of professional skills during workshop-style sessions. Following an opening plenary,
participants will break up into four concurrent sessions for discussions on a variety of topics. Sessions will view issues of diversity
from government, academic, and industrial perspectives and will examine how these issues affect individuals at various stages of career
development.
Parallel sessions will provide an interactive forum for engaging on specific topics such as communication, mentoring, and creating
a diverse workplace. A concluding session will feature a capstone presentation and summary of the issues, strategies, resources, and
recommendations identified throughout the summit.

Barb Arnold (PrepTech) will kick off the program by discussing the academic and professional legacy of Ellen Swallow Richards. Pam Swallow, the first cousin three generations removed of Ellen Swallow Richards, will then talk about the personal legacy and accomplishments of Richards. The first Ellen Swallow Richards Diversity award will also be presented to Viola Acoff (University of Alabama).
