This in-depth presentation gives an historical overview of technological changes and engineering research directions in the United States, followed by an analysis of the current global status of engineering, and concluding with opportunities for U.S. engineering, particularly with respect to engineering education. Dr. Apelian recommends that the image of engineering must change, emphasis must be placed on the societal impact of engineering, engineering curricula must evolve with current global needs, and U.S. research and development funding must increase.
