This site contains experimental and simulation results pertaining to pitting corrosion of stainless steel. The experiment and simulation tracked number of pits and total current as a function of time. Two videos are presented, in situ contrast-enhanced microscopy and simulation results of pit distribution using a stochastic model. The research is published in:
Punckt, C., M. Bölscher, H.H. Rotermund, A.S. Mikhailov, L. Organ, N. Budiansky, J. R. Scully, and J. L. Hudson, "Sudden Onset of Pitting Corrosion on Stainless Steel as a Critical Phenomenon," Science, 305: 1133-1136 (2004).
