This video of an actual tensile test on an unspecified metal sample demonstrates elongation and necking. It is accompanied by an animation of atomic bond lengthening and the formation of slip planes.

The VIMS web resource offers a detailed description of an interactive and graphics-based sophomore level introductory materials science course available on CD-ROM. Links to sample animated graphics, videos, and worked problems are provided throughout the description. The course was developed as an initiative of the Southeastern University and College Coalition for Engineering Education (SUCCEED).
