This paper details three techniques for visualizing and quantifying high temperature solidification phenomena: the double hot thermocouple technique, the confocal laser microscope, and the combination of video and mold instrumentation. Several video clips are included showing crystal formation in a transparent oxide and melting and solidification in Fe-C alloys and low-carbon steel.
