The presentation from Naiyi Li of Ford Motor Company begins describing the benefits of using magnesium in automotive applications, considering fuel economy, emission standards, safety and other factors. Numerous applications are then illustrated. The rest of the presentation focuses on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Li describes the data needed to conduct an LCA with impacts on global warming, acidification, summer smog potential, winter smog potential, ozone depletion, emission affecting fauna/flora and nutrification potential. Life cycle energies and emissions are compared for steel, aluminum and magnesium. Li notes that SF6 has been prohibited at Ford starting 1/31/2004 and concludes with a description of R&D programs in which Ford is involved.
