Impact is a 3-D Finite Element mechanics code. Its focus is dynamic deformation of thin sheet structures, such as those made of sheet metal. Its use of explicit timestepping and Java implementation make it quite slow, though Java makes it cross-platform; it runs seamlessly on Windows, MacOS, and Linux, including GIJ/GNU Classpath. Its pre- and post-processor are somewhat amateur, though it reportedly links with Gmsh for more advanced visualization.
