Media Resources and Background Materials
Please note that the Comic-taniumexhibit is no longer available. Elements of this project are being applied to the next phase of TMS educational outreach—the TMS Materials Explorers initiative. Check the TMS home page and other communication outlets regularly for updates. The Comic-tanium website will not be updated.
Many secrets behind the powers of some of the greatest comic book characters have little to do with alien
worlds and mutant abilities. There is actually some serious science going on within the comic realm, much of it
focused on the materials that both heroes and villains use to boost their abilities, provide protection, and in
some instances, define who they are. Comic-tanium™ is an educational outreach initiative presented by TMS that
makes that connection between the comic universe and the "real world" to inspire the next generation of minerals,
metals, and materials scientists and engineers.

Comic-tanium™’s appeal crosses generations. An educational outreach project presented by TMS, Comic-tanium™ uses the mythology of
beloved comic characters to explain how scientists and engineers, as "living super heroes" make sure we have the materials we need for a
safer, healthier, and more advanced society. (Photo credit: TMS)
A major theme in Comic-tanium™ is the importance of diversity in minerals, metals, and materials science and engineering, so a
wide variety of viewpoints can contribute to solving complex problems. Comic-tanium is an educational outreach initiative presented
by TMS. (Photo credit: TMS)
Comic-tanium™, an educational outreach initiative presented by TMS, teams up comic art reproductions, movie props, and other artifacts
with related scientific images and stories to engage and excite students about the possibilities of "real world" science and engineering.
