"What is Scandium, Where is it Found, and What is it Used For?"
Speakers
Director of Grandfield Technology Pty Ltd., (a consulting and technology firm) and adjunct professor at Swinburne University of Technology in the High Temperature Processing Group, John Grandfield has a Bachelor’s of applied science in Metallurgy (RMIT University), a M.Sc. in mathematical modelling (Monash University), and a Ph.D. in materials science (University of Queensland). Grandfield has 30 years’ experience in light metals research and technology in continuous casting and metal refining. He is regularly invited to give training courses, participate in in-house innovation workshops, and conduct R&D program reviews around the world. Grandfield also conducts metals industry analysis on the scandium, tungsten, and magnesium industries with analysts CM Group. He has five patents, has published two book chapters, has more than 50 conference and journal papers, and has co-authored a book on DC casting of light metals. He was chair of the TMS Aluminum Committee and editor of Light Metals 2014 and Essential Readings in Light Metals. He is the 2018 recipient of the TMS Light Metals Division Distinguished Service Award and the Keith Brimacombe Prize.
Henk van der Laan
Consultant
Henk van der Laan is a senior consultant and owner of Van der Laan International Consultancy BV (V.I.C.). Henk was born in 1954 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Henk has worked for 42 years in the aluminium industry, of which 34 years at KBM Affilips BV as an international sales manager for aluminium based master alloys. The last 10 years he has been active as a procurement manager at KBM for scandium. In his search for scandium, he has identified 57 prospective scandium suppliers. Henk has studied Metallurgy in Utrecht and Business Economics in Rotterdam and Industrial Marketing in Arnhem, all in The Netherlands. As a metallurgist he is specialized in the grain refining mechanism of Aluminium Titanium Boron, which is the main product of KBM. Besides his passion for aerospace, astronomy, aluminium, and scandium, Henk is an active mountain biker, a passioned golfer, and a great fan of all kinds of sports like soccer, cycling, and formula 1.

Dmitry Eskin received his engineering and Ph.D. degrees from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (Technical University, Russia). After that, he worked as a senior scientist in the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy (Russian Academy of Sciences) with a main research focus in alloy development, heat treatment, and metal processing of aluminum alloys. From 1999 to 2011, he was a Fellow at the Materials Innovation Institute (The Netherlands) and, since 2008, he has also held the position of associate professor at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands), where he conducted fundamental and applied research on solidification processing of metallic materials. In 2011 he joined Brunel University (U.K.) as a professor. His current research concerns solidification processing of light alloys. He is a well-known specialist in physical metallurgy and solidification processing of light alloys and author and co-author of more than 250 scientific papers, seven monographs, and a number of patents. Among his books are Multicomponent Phase Diagrams: Applications for Commercial Aluminum Alloys (2005), Physical Metallurgy of Direct-Chill Casting of Aluminum Alloys (2008), Direct-Chill Casting of Light Alloys: Science and Technology (2013), Ultrasonic Melt Treatment of Light Alloys Melts (2014), and Solidification Processing of Metallic Alloys Under External Fields (2018). Eskin has been a member of TMS since 2000, where he has co-organized a number of symposia, and is a regular speaker at TMS annual meetings. He is a recipient of two Warren Peterson Cast Shop for Aluminum Production Awards and one Aluminum Technology Award from TMS.

"Aluminum Scandium Alloy Metallurgy and Applications"

Thomas Dorin
Deakin University
Dr. Thomas Dorin was awarded his Ph.D. in November 2013 from the University of Grenoble in France. He was then offered a 100% research postdoctoral fellowship at Deakin University in the world leading metals research group at the Institute for Frontier Materials (IFM) in January 2014. Dr. Dorin is now a Senior Research Fellow, holding an ARC DECRA fellowship and the leader of the aluminum group at Deakin University. Dr. Dorin’s research is focused on the development of innovative strategies to better understand, optimize, and control an alloy’s microstructure to reach optimal bulk properties for specific applications. One of his particular interests is gaining a better understanding of precipitation mechanisms and quantifying the relationship between precipitates and strength. Dr. Dorin’s current research focuses on understanding the interactions between scandium and other alloying elements in wrought aluminum alloys. Dr. Dorin has an h-factor of 16 and totals over 40 publications. In 2018, Dr. Dorin authored two chapters in the 2nd edition of “Fundamentals of Aluminium Metallurgy: Recent Advances”, published by Elsevier and edited by Prof. Roger Lumley. The two chapters are titled “Aluminium-Lithium alloys” and “Aluminium-Scandium alloys”.

Dr. Efthymios Balomenos studied Mining and Metallurgical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens and received his Ph.D. degree in Thermodynamics from the same school in 2006. Since 2008 he has been working in the Laboratory of Metallurgy as a postdoc researcher focusing on sustainable process development, CO2 mitigation strategies, exergy analysis, and resource utilization efficiency. He is involved in the research management and coordination of several collaborative large scale research projects (ENEXAL, EURARE, SCALE, ENSUREAL, REMOVAL, BIORECOVER, AlSiCaL, ReActiv) most of which focus on Bauxite Residue valorization. He has more than 65 research publications in journals and conference proceeding with more than 600 citations and an h-index of 14. Since 2015, he has been a residue valorization engineer in MYTILINEOS S.A., Metallurgy Business Unit. He was a recipient of the TMS Light Metals Subject Award – Alumina & Bauxite in 2017 and invited keynote speaker at TMS2021 under the at Sustainability in the Aluminum Supply Chain session. He is also an ICSOBA Regional Ambassador.
Ghazaleh Nazari

Dr. Nazari is a registered professional engineer with fourteen years research, process engineering, and technology development experience in the field of hydrometallurgy. In these years, she developed a broad and in-depth understanding of various hydrometallurgical processes. Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Li, REE, Se, and Te processing and treatment have been her area of focus. Dr. Nazari completed her BASc and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering with a minor degree in Business and Engineering Management from The University of British Columbia. Upon completing her Ph.D., Dr. Nazari joined Hatch, a global multidisciplinary management, engineering, and development consultancy, as an NSERC Industrial Research & Development (IRDF) Postdoctoral Fellow and continued her career at Hatch as a Senior Process Engineer and Global Lead of Business and Technology Development within Hydrometallurgy Practice for eight years. Dr. Nazari has been the Director of Technology at II-VI Performance Metals Division since 2019. She has been responsible for the technology and process development activities; improving existing processes and resolving technical challenges in operation and manufacturing. She has been leading and managing engineering and technology development projects with internal and external partners, focusing on new products and process developments. She has been advancing processes from laboratory, to pilot, and full-scale materials manufacturing to enable successful commercialization of projects.

Samuel R. Wagstaff is currently a partner at Oculatus Consulting, specializing in aluminum processing and product development. He earned his B.Sc. degree from Cornell University in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 2013. Samuel then earned a M.Sc. degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) focusing on characterizing macrosegregation patterns in large format rolling slabs. He then earned a Sc.D. in 2016, also from MIT, for his work on engineering convective flows to minimize the appearance of macrosegregation. Following his graduate studies, he worked at Novelis in their rolling facility in Sierre, Switzerland in their automotive development department, focusing on process refinement and product troubleshooting. In 2018, he moved to the Novelis R&D center in Kennesaw, Georgia where he became a lead scientist for product and process development. At Oculatus, he works on next-generation technologies for the aluminum sector and improvements in current processes. His current focus is on improving the profitability of existing centers via casting process improvement and recycle-based product development. Samuel is the author of 16 peer-reviewed articles and inventor of over 25 patent applications.

Frank Palm is Senior Expert Welding & Related Processes at Airbus Central Research & Technology. He is a dedicated materials, welding, and process specialist in the aerospace technology field and failure analyses with a strong current focus on additive manufacturing material & process fundamental elaborating the prospects of Sc in Al-alloys applications for more than 25 years. Over the past 30 years, he has initiated, written, and published more than 50 presentations, scientific papers, as well more than 30 invention filings and Airbus-related patent applications, and, together with Airbus, currently holds more than 15 patents in the field of additive manufacturing, metallic materials technology, and integral aircraft fuselage constructions (e.B. Scalmalloy® - AlMgSc alloy concept for Additive Manufacturing).

Frédéric Benoit, Head of Department – Scandium Plant at Rio Tinto Fer et Titane, is in charge of the new scandium oxide production facility in Sorel-Tracy, QC, Canada. With a strong technical background as a process engineer, Benoit has occupied different technical, operational, and strategic roles in his 8 years of career at Rio Tinto. Being a board member of the Association québécoise des consommateurs industriels d’électricité (AQCIE), which regroups all major industrial electricity consumers in Quebec, Benoit is well aware of energy availability challenges and has a marked interest in new technologies.

Jerome Fourmann serves as Director, Technical Marketing - Global Customer Support and Product Development for the aluminum product group of Rio Tinto. Since joining Rio Tinto in 2000, Fourmann applies his technical expertise in the field of aluminum products metallurgy tailored to the transportation, architectural, and consumer durable markets. Fourmann is the Chairman of the Technical Committee on Product Standard at The Aluminum Association and is the Vice-Chair of ET. Fourmann is a frequent presenter at industry conferences and Contributing Editor for the international magazine Light Metal Age.
Dr. Martijn Vos serves as the Director New Product Commercialisation at UC RUSAL. He is an Aluminium Veteran with over 25 years’ experience across the industry in technical and commercial roles in several aluminum companies in Europe, ME, US, and Russia.
Moderator
Chris is a metallurgist who graduated from Imperial College London with a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mineral Processing. He has worked for a number of organizations, over a 45 year career in resources, including over 25 years for Billiton and subsequently, BHP Billiton. Chris also spent 5 years with Bloom Energy in California as part of their team working on scandium oxide supply. He is currently a non-executive director for Platina Resources Ltd, an Australian junior exploration company with exploration and development projects covering precious metals and scandium.
