Starting a new company in the materials science and engineering (MS&E) domain involves overcoming significant challenges and barriers. For the companies that make it, conquering these challenges can be very rewarding. In this new roundtable webinar, two entrepreneurs will highlight some of their key experiences starting two different types of MS&E-based companies, including the various challenges they faced, their experiences, and the growth associated with such startups.

What You Will Experience

  • Hear from entrepreneurs on the manufacturing of metallic components and computational-based machine learning and data management
  • Learn from the direct experiences of entrepreneurs as they overcame key challenges and barriers to their pathways in developing successful companies
  • Gain insights on how to stabilize and grow startup companies
  • Explore your questions about staring a MS&E-based company

In 2020, she was named as one of SME’s 20 Exceptional Women in Aerospace and Defense Manufacturing for her focus on opening the design space for multi-material components. She holds a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois and an M.S. in Systems Architecture and Engineering from the University of Southern California. In addition to her role at FormAlloy, Lang currently serves on the America Makes Executive Committee, as the Vice President of Legislative Affairs for Navy League San Diego and is the Women in 3D-Printing Ambassador for San Diego.

Bryce Meredig

Chief Science Officer and Cofounder, Citrine Informatics
"Entrepreneurship in Materials Informatics"

In this talk, the presenter will share the story of Citrine Informatics' growth, from the company's founding in 2013 to today. He will also describe his own entrepreneurial journey and some observations from the experience of building a company.

Bio
Bryce Meredig is cofounder and chief science officer of Citrine Informatics, a materials informatics platform company, where he leads the External Research Department (ERD). The ERD conducts publishable research with collaborators in academia, government, and industry. Meredig's research interests include the development and validation of physics-informed machine learning methods specific to applications in materials science and chemistry, integration of physics-based simulations with machine learning, and data infrastructure for materials science. Meredig received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University and BAS and MBA from Stanford University.

Moderator

John E. Barnes

Founding ADDvisor®, Managing Director & CEO, The Barnes Global Advisors

Bio
John E. Barnes has a 25+ year career in product development and aerospace with Honeywell, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works™, Australia’s CSIRO, and Arconic (formerly Alcoa and RTI International Metals). He has been involved in metal additive manufacturing throughout his career, beginning in the late 1990s, where he was part of the Sandia National Labs LENS™ CRADA. Since then, he has been in and around additive manufacturing, working both technical and business cases, for the implementation and development efforts in materials, powders, processing, and printing to mature the technology for applications. Barnes is recognized internationally for contributions to additive manufacturing, product development, and leadership in engineering. His groups boast world firsts in medical, therapeutic, and aerospace additive manufacturing. Barnes is a materials engineer by background, but has developed expertise in manufacturing, airframe structures, gas turbines, and low observables. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University, both in Melbourne, Australia. In 2014, he was Purdue University’s Materials Engineer of the Year, and in 2017, he was invited to join the Additive Manufacturing Technical Community as a SME Advisor based upon active industry contributions, reputation, and personal commitment to expand the use of additive manufacturing.
