Live Event: Wednesday, July 21, 2021
While the public perception is that researchers toil away in laboratories in isolation, the reality is that interactions between colleagues are critical to both a successful research organization and your career. The key to developing and sustaining these interactions in an organization is leadership. This webinar will highlight successful (and unsuccessful) approaches to fostering strong interactive and diverse research teams, from small research groups to large interdisciplinary research centers and departments.
What You Will Learn
- The importance of diversity and interdisciplinarity in productive research groups
- Approaches that foster creative problem solving
- The challenges of change in an existing research culture
- Approaches to time management and work-life balance

He is the founding co-director of the Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering (NAISE), Director of the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD), and incoming Department Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering. During his term as co-director of NAISE, it has grown to a center with over 150 principal investigators from Northwestern and Argonne National Laboratory with a large research portfolio spanning fields from medicine to computer science and materials science and engineering. CHiMaD is the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Center of Excellence in Advanced Materials and involves more than 90 principal investigators at NIST, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and Argonne National Laboratory. CHiMaD is focused on realizing the vision of the Materials Genome Initiative. Professor Voorhees begins his second term as Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department in September 2021.
Peter Voorhees received his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was a member of the Metallurgy Division at the National Institute for Standards and Technology until joining the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards including the ASM International Materials Science Division Research Award (Silver Medal), the TMS Bruce Chalmers Award, the ASM J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award, and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science Award for Teaching Excellence. Professor Voorhees is a fellow of ASM International, the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, and the American Physical Society. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has published over 300 papers in the area of the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations.
