TMS 2011: Technical Program: Materials Processing and Production
February 27 - March 3, 2011 • San Diego, California

Fundamentals and general issues of extraction, processing and manufacturing will be covered.

PLANNED SYMPOSIA

2nd International Symposium on High-Temperature Metallurgical Processing
This symposium will promote physical and chemical transformations in the materials to enable recovery of valuable metals or produce products such as pure metals, intermediate compounds, alloys (including steel), or ceramics. [Learn more]

Chloride 2011: Practice and Theory of Chloride-Based Metallurgy
This symposium will examine the advancements in the field of metallurgical processing with chloride media over the past decade. All aspects will be discussed, as well as the advancements in the fundamental understanding of chloride media and processes. [Learn more] [View PDF]

Electrometallurgy Fundamentals and Applications
This symposium will focus on fundamental research, development, and/or application of innovative aqueous or molten salt electrometallurgical processing technologies for the extraction, concentration, recovery, refining, environmental treatment, and recycling of metals from ores, concentrates, process solutions, scrap or waste. [Learn more]

Friction Stir Welding and Processing VI
This symposium will present fundamentals and the current status of friction stir welding (FSW) and solid-state friction stir processing of materials. It will provide researchers and engineers with an opportunity to review the current status of the friction stir related processes and discuss the future possibilities. [Learn more]

Frontiers in Solidification Science
This symposium will gather leading researchers in the field to address the outstanding questions that are critical to the advancement of the field and to discuss the benefits and limitations of various new methodologies used in the investigation of solidification. [Learn more]

General Abstract Sessions: Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division
A wide range of Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division presentations are planned. [Learn more]

Hydrometallurgy Fundamentals and Applications
This symposium will focus on fundamental research, development, and/or application of innovative hydrometallurgical processing technologies for the extraction, concentration, recovery, refining, environmental treatment, and recycling of metals from ores, concentrates, process solutions, scrap, or waste. [Learn more]

Materials Processing Fundamentals
The symposium will cover all aspects of the fundamentals, synthesis, analysis, design, monitoring, and control of metals, materials, and metallurgical processes and phenomena. Topics will include the experimental, analytical, physical and computer modeling aspects of the physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena in materials and metallurgical processes involving iron, steel, non-ferrous metals, and composites. [Learn more]

Processing and Properties of Powder-Based Materials
This symposium will examine research on powder synthesis and design, characterization, powder processing, powder consolidation and properties. While the symposium is limited to powder-based materials, it is material non-specific, and may include (but not limited to) pure metals, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, intermetallics, ceramics, and composites. [Learn more]

Sensors, Sampling, and Simulation for Process Control
This symposium will explore the current state of the art in control of industrial processes in the field of extraction and processing of metals and materials. New sensor technologies, more advanced real-time models, and faster computers are enabling better control systems for these processes. [Learn more]

Shape Casting IV: Light Metals Division Symposium in Honor of Prof. John T. Berry
This symposium will examine the solidification and process-structure-property relationships in shaped castings and cover these subjects: liquid metal quality; filling and feeding systems; process modeling for shaped castings; structure-property relationships; performance of shaped castings; machinablility of castings. [Learn more]

Ultrasonic Welding for Lightweight Components
This symposium will review developments and innovations in the field of ultrasonic welding, as well as the progress of hardware and software for ultrasonic welding systems, new joints, and especially their mechanical and physical properties. [Learn more]
