Third Workshop on the Effects of Alloying Elements on the Gamma to Alpha Transformation in Steels

Date: October 7, 2002
Time: 8:30AM– 5:00 PM
Location: Columbus Crowne Plaza Hotel
Room: Muirfield Ballroom (Gallery C)

This workshop is the third in a series of events (the first was held in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2000; the second was conducted during 2001 in Metz, France). The series blends basic and applied research studies of alloying element effects upon proeutectoid ferrite and bainite reactions, mainly in Fe-C-X alloys. Coverage of more complex steels is included as well.

This year's workshop, organized by Gary Purdy of McMaster University, focues on two areas:

  • The coupled-solute drag effect. Here, studies encompass the application of theories (Purdy & Brechet; Enomoto) and powerful experimental techniques (STEM, 3DAP) for detecting the predicted (and now extensively confirmed) accumulation of X at austenite:ferrite boundaries.

  • Incisive examinations of the orthoequilibrium and paraequilibrium hypotheses for ferrite growth (Hultgren, Hillert, Kirkaldy, Purdy, Coates). Included is discussion of experiments carefully designed for this purpose.

In both areas, the THERMO-CALC database is utilized to calculate the phase diagrams that form the framework for kinetic analyses.

The program will be held 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7, in the Muirfield Ballroom (Gallery C) of the Columbus Crowne Plaza Hotel.
