TMS 2009: Turning Green
February 15-19, 2009 • San Francisco, California

TMS is committed to environmental responsibility as we fulfill our mission of promoting the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials. TMS is a member of the Convene Green Alliance, a grass-roots organization of associations concerned about the environment.

TMS is making strides to eliminate waste, recycle and conserve energy in all we do, from our activities in the office to our conferences. The success of these efforts involves staff, members, meeting attendees and our vendors.

With the support of the Premier Green Sponsor of TMS 2009, Fives Solios, we are able to provide several environmentally friendly amenities, including re-usable canvas messenger bags distributed at registration; recycling bins conveniently located throughout the facility; and support for the "green"-themed community service project.

Find out what else TMS and our vendors are doing to "green" this meeting.

GREEN INITIATIVES

These efforts are helping to make the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting & Exhibition green:

  • Advance registration is completely electronic – no printed forms were mailed.
  • The Materials and Society technical symposia address energy, environmental, and sustainability issues.
  • The final technical program will be available as a PDF download on this Web site and also available electronically through the TMS Personal Conference Scheduler. (Printed final programs will also be available at the conference.)
  • Collected proceedings will be on a CD-ROM.
  • We are eliminating the plastic bags provided at registration, and each full-conference attendee will be given a re-usable canvas bag courtesy of TMS 2009 Premier Green Sponsor Fives Solios.
  • Recycling containers will be placed in the convention center for bottles, cans and paper, courtesy of TMS 2009 Premier Green Sponsor Fives Solios.
  • The on-site Today Newsletter will not be printed on paper but will be available electronically.
  • At the close of the meeting, recycling containers will be available for attendees to drop off badge holders and final programs, courtesy of TMS 2009 Premier Green Sponsor Fives Solios.
  • All hotels are within walking distance – no need for shuttles.
  • We have organized a community service project on Saturday, Feb. 14, with the organization Hands On Bay Area to develop an organic garden for low income families in the Bay Area. This project is also supported by TMS 2009 Premier Green Sponsor Fives Solios.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  1. Register online.
  2. Print the information you are interested in from the final program PDF or the TMS Personal Conference Scheduler as opposed to using a printed program.
  3. If you use a printed program on-site and will not need it after the conference, be sure to place it in the recycling bin before you leave.
  4. Use the recycling containers for your empty water bottles, soda cans and paper.
  5. Drop off your badge holder in the recycling bin before leaving the conference.
  6. Walk from your hotel to the convention center rather than taking a cab. The hotels TMS has contracted with are all within walking distance.
  7. Participate in the community service project! Sign up when you register for the conference.
