The Status and Impact of DOE’s Energy Materials Network (EMN) on Hydrogen Technology

Hydrogen technology is the focus of this study, with an emphasis on material development to support a clean hydrogen energy economy. TMS has assembled an expert study team to examine the status, impact, and future opportunities of hydrogen technology for the Department of Energy’s Energy Materials Network (EMN) and the EMN’s four hydrogen-related consortia.

The team is leading a 20-month initiative from December 2021 to June 2023. The final report was released in June 2024.

The Status and Impact of DOE’s Energy Materials Network (EMN) on Hydrogen Technology is a TMS science and technology accelerator study that is funded by the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Office (DOE-EERE-HFTO) via the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Planned Milestones

  • Amplify the four essential technological domains that are crucial for the broad acceptance of clean hydrogen
  • Review the specific research areas for each of the four EMN consortia related to hydrogen, which are contributing to the progress of the hydrogen economy
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis to pinpoint the main gaps, barriers, requirements, and facilitators for the development of materials needed for achieving a competitive and robust clean hydrogen infrastructure
  • Offer tangible suggestions, significant milestones, thorough action plans, and routes for implementation that are necessary to lay the groundwork for the transition from basic concepts into manufactured components in the field of clean energy
