Over the past few months, TMS members have been encouraged to nominate a deserving colleague for one of a dozen TMS awards that recognize excellence in materials science and engineering. Several of the awards are specifically offered to those who have demonstrated leadership in the materials field:
  • Leadership Award: Recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the national and international materials community in the fields of metallurgy or materials
  • William Hume-Rothery Award: Recognizes a scientific leader for exceptional scholarly contributions to the science of alloys
  • Institute of Metals Lecturer & Robert Franklin Mehl Award: Recognizes an outstanding scientific leader who is invited to present a lecture on the materials science and application of metals
Nominate an outstanding materials leader through the new on-line nomination form by October 31.

Extraction and Processing Issue Focuses on Peirce-Smith Converting

This issue includes a pair of articles on the Peirce-Smith Converting Centennial, looking ahead to the centennial symposium planned for the TMS 2009 Annual Meeting and back to the process's historical development. In addition, this issue looks to the future of metal production with a feature article on generic melt circulation technology for metals recovery that could reduce energy consumption in the metal production industries.
